Young people in the Cook Islands to have access to NZ youth helpline

4:04 pm on 19 March 2012

Young people in the Cook Islands will soon be able to access the toll free New Zealand helpline Youthline.

Telecom Cook Islands will link the calls to Auckland where they will be answered by staff trained to help young people.

Youthline triage team leader ,Smita Ramji, who travelled to the islands, says young people there are dealing with the same problems others from across the world are dealing with.

She says they are just experiencing them in a different cultural setting.

"I think it arose from a bit of a need where young people have identified they've been going through some difficult things there in the community. There are a few around services around but really something that's really accesible that they can access just for a space they can talk."

Smita Ramji says it is hoped the service will be available to young people in the Cook Islands in the next few weeks.
