US-Marshall Islands committee to discuss Compact Funding grants

7:38 am on 22 March 2012

The US-Marshall Islands Joint Economic Management and Financial Accountability Committee met in Majuro yesterday for its mid-year meeting with key funding decisions in education and health on the table.

The US Ambassador to the Marshall Islands, Martha Campbell, says the Committee is a vital component of the Compact of Free Association the US has with the Marshalls.

Under the Compact, the U.S. provides grants to six sectors: health, education, infrastructure, private sector development, public sector capacity building, and the environment in exchange for full international defense authority and responsibilities.

The Committee meets to approve the allocation of Compact grants among these sectors.
