UN investigator to assess impact of Marshall Islands nuke tests on human rights

7:46 pm on 22 March 2012

A United Nations Special Rapporteur, Calin Georgescu, will visit the Marshall Islands next week to assess the impact on human rights of the nuclear tests conducted by the United States between 1946 and 1958.

It will be the first ever visit to the country by an independent expert of the UN Human Rights Council.

Mr Georgescu says the four day visit will be a chance to gather lessons learnt in the field of nuclear testing and how to ensure accountability.

And he says it will be an exceptional opportunity to assess how the Marshallese peoples' basic rights including the right to food, adequate housing and health have been affected.
