Call for democratic reforms sparked by late Tongan King to be given time to settle

Tonga's former Prime Minister says the Kingdom needs to treat the legacy of democratic changes left by the late King with a solemn respect.

Questions have been raised over whether the new King, Tupou the Sixth, will continue the process of democratic change.

Lord Feleti Sevele says the changes made under George Tupou the Fifth were revolutionary.

He says now they need to be solidified.

"With political changes, they are not things to be taken lightly. And with the huge changes we have seen, and have achieved over the past 10-15 years, I think it is incumbent on all of us, all of us who have the interests of Tonga to let those changes, to let the new system settle."

Lord Feleti Sevele says he believes Tonga's political system is now one of considerable strength.
