The government of French Polynesia wants to use a summit in July to draw attention to its wish to be re-included on the United Nations decolonisation list.
The Asia Pacific Forum in July aims to bring an international focus to the territory's political and economic issues.
It will involve the Club of Madrid which is made up of former national leaders from around the World.
French Polynesia's president Oscar Temaru revealed plans for the Forum alongside former New Zealand Prime Minister Dame Jenny Shipley, a Club of Madrid member, in Brisbane earlier this week.
He says they want to highlight that the colonial era is over.
"We are 2012. All the other countries are independent. New Caledonia was in the situation was in the same situation. And New Caledonia was [inscribed] on that list in 1988. It is exactly the same situation."
President Oscar Temaru says they also help to draw attention to the resource development in French Polynesia.
