Saipan cleanup of toxic soil on hold after a US army unit runs out of funds

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has temporarily suspended its clean up in I-Denni on Capital Hill in Saipan in the Northern Marianas because it has temporarily run out of money.

The area is being cleared of polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs, and lead-contaminated soil.

The affected area covers five times what was originally estimated.

The pit in I-Denni was used by the U.S. military during and after World War II as a waste repository.
