Samoa continued their late season revival on the IRB Sevens Circuit but fell agonisingly short of a second Cup title, going down 28-26 to Australia in the final of the Tokyo Sevens.
Alafoti Fa'osiliva opened the scoring in the final and, after falling behind, Samoa rallied with a second Fa'osiliva try and another from Ken Pisi to put the Las Vegas champions up 26 -21.
But Australia had the final say with captain Ed Jenkins dotting down to tie the scores before 19-year-old Matt Lucas held his nerve to slot a long-range conversion in the dying seconds.
Following the final Jenkins praised his team's newer faces.
"We've got a young bunch of guys out there so I guess to get that winning culture amongst us is going to great. We didn't play that well yesterday obviously against New Zealand in that last pool game - it wasn't that great - and we knew we could come out today and give the tournament a shake up and we sure did."
Meanwhile Fiji recovered from their quarter final exit to beat South Africa 14-10 in the Plate final.
That kept captain Setefano Cakau's side within six points of overall series leaders New Zealand.
