Sport: Mateo in four team tug of war

10:33 am on 3 April 2012

The Tonga Rugby League captain Feleti Mateo is set to be at the centre of an international tug of war for his services, with England, Australia and New Zealand all touted as possible destinations.

The Sydney-born utility qualifies for England through his mother and would also be eligible for New Zealand next year through residency, having lived in Auckland for two years.

The 26 year old captained Tonga at the 2008 World Cup, which currently makes him ineligible for any other nation and rules him out of playing for New South Wales, unless he makes a formal application to the International Federation to change his allegiance.

England coach Steve McNamara says Mateo is a class player, but it's not for him to chase players.

Mateo's manager David Riolo says he will discuss his client's options this week when he sees him at the Warriors' training camp.
