Transport links and regular air service are back up and running in Fiji after days of rain has caused extensive flooding in the country.

Five people are known to have died and another three people are missing.

The Fiji permanent secretary of information, Sharon Smith Johns says the situation is much better today.

"The bridge that was out before Nadi we've now repaired that, so two lanes of that are open. It's calm people are just really getting gack to try and get back to their normal lives and clean up after these floods and it's a huge clean up to do here."

Sharon Smith Johns says while about eight thousand people remain in evacuation centres, that number should start reducing from today.

She has denied reports that there has been a problem with looting in Nadi.
