Kava ban issue taken back to European Parliament

6:53 pm on 3 April 2012

Vanuatu's deputy chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly of the African Caribbean Pacific and European Union group, David Tosul, has tabled the Pacific Kava Document in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The move is seen as a breakthrough by the Pacific kava exporting countries after a ten-year old ban on kava exports to Europe.

Mr Tosul, who's an MP for the kava producing island of Pentecost, was mandated by the recent International Kava Conference in Port Vila to table the document in Brussels.

He says the European MPs did not know what kava was and why it was banned in Europe and he had to explain about the plant and its uses.
