The Samoa Rugby Union has confirmed that it is yet to sign up a new coach despite an announcement on Wednesday that former Australia A coach Adrian Thompson had been appointed.

Mr Thompson says he is yet to agree terms and that has been confirmed by the union's secretary Ameporosa Roma.

"We expect to hear from Mr Thompson some time next week as to whether the terms of that offer are acceptable to him. I think there are some other issues that we need to finalise before we actually sign a contract and Mr Thompson will be getting back to us in regard to those issues, but yes, no formal contract has been signed at this stage."

Meanwhile a rugby club in Samoa has been suspended from competing for two weeks and a player in its senior reserve team has been banned for life after the alleged assault of a referee.

The Vaiusu rugby club also has to pay a fine of 500 US dollars, though this could be reduced if the club makes a formal apology and asks for leniency.

The player accused of assaulting the referee is also being charged by the police and is due to appear in court next Tuesday.
