Fiji Red Cross says aid agencies focussing on disease prevention

The Fiji Red Cross says aid agencies in flood affected areas are focusing on disease prevention as people head back to their homes.

The confirmed death toll from the flooding, which hit the Western Division and parts of the Central Division, last week stands at five and about 2,000 people are still in evacuation centres

Christopher Ho says hygiene and sanitisation kits are being flown in from Australia and New Zealand to deal with the aftermath of the flooding.

He says some of the ground is still covered in water.

"We are taking precautionary measures in terms of getting some sanitary and hygiene issues resolved rather than have the outbreak if typhoid and other water related illnesses."

Christopher Ho says some villagers still collect water from rivers and sanitisation will prevent them from getting sick.
