The director of the Fiji Disaster Management Office says between 30 and 40,000 people are receiving rations following floods that killed at least six and caused widespread devastation.
Pajiliai Dobui says the number of people in evacuation centres in the Western Division stands at just over 1,800 and there are 28 evacuees from a village in the Central Division's Rewa province.
Flooding forced about 14,000 people to leave their homes but Mr Dobui says about 12,000 have been able to return home.
He says rations are being distributed to the remaining evacuees as well as the families affected by flooding.
"Rations will continue to be supplied until, depending on the Commissioner Western's advice and recommendations and that will also come from the Ministry of Agriculture on how long the population is to be provided with rations until they're able to feed themselves."
Pajiliai Dobui says a team comprising members of the military, government agencies and the civil service are distributing the rations.
