French MP held up in New Caledonia robbery

6:56 pm on 11 April 2012

A French Socialist MP has been caught up in an armed hold-up at a petrol station in New Caledonia.

Bernard Lesterlin was talking to a station attendant when an armed couple arrived and stole about 800 dollars.

Mr Lesterlin, who has been campaigning on behalf of Francois Hollande, was at the petrol station on his way to the airport to fly to Wallis and Futuna.

He spoke to the police at the airport before catching his flight, but laid no complaint.

The two robbers, who were filmed, were immediately identified and arrested within hours.
