The Governor of Papua New Guinea's National Capital District says the Electoral Commissioner needs to prove that he is ready to hold elections in late June.
Parliament last week voted for a six-month deferral of the elections.
However, the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill now says the elections will go ahead according to the Electoral Commissioner's original schedule for polling to begin on June the 23rd.
Powes Parkop says he supports this but he's reluctant to be party to a decision that he claims will disenfranchise most of the population because of incomplete common rolls.
"We have a situation now where if we go ahead with the election as the Chief Electoral Commissioner scheduled, there will be failed elections in about seven of our provinces in the Highlands and that represents about sixty percent of our population. So really, the ball is in the court of the Chief Electoral Commissioner to convince parliament and the public that he is absolutely ready as he claims."
