CMAG to meet in London and situation in Fiji to be discussed

5:20 am on 14 April 2012

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group will be meeting at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London next Monday.

It will discuss the situations in Fiji and Maldives, as well as ways in which the Commonwealth could further promote adherence to its fundamental political values more generally.

Fiji was fully suspended from the Commonwealth in September 2009 by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group.

At the same time, CMAG has consistently encouraged the Secretary-General to remain engaged with Fiji with a view to assisting in the restoration of full respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law

Last month, the Deputy Secretary-General Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba was in Fiji on a three day visit.

During her trip, she met with senior members of the interim government, non-government interlocutors, and representatives of the international community.

The CMAG member countries attending next Monday's meeting are Australia, Vanuatu, Bangladesh, Canada, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
