Samoa rugby changes tack but denies mishandling coach appointment

The Samoa Rugby Union has promoted Stephen Betham to head coach of Manu Samoa.

At the start of the month the union announced the national sevens coach would be assistant to new head coach, Australia based, Adrian Thompson.

But subsequently Tompson and the union haven't been able to agree on contract terms.

The union says it was because their "preferred candidate" wasn't able to meet the requirement of living in Samoa.

Union secretary Ameperosa Roma denies the process has been mishandled.

"I made it clear right from the start, we make the appointment and we were working on negotiating the terms of the contract. Unfortunately that couldn't be reached. We have gone ahead and made another decision which we are very happy with."
