Eight arrests over Cooks burglaries

2:21 pm on 17 April 2012

Eight people thought to be responsible for a spate of burglaries have been arrested by Cook Islands police in the past few days.

Six appeared in court on Saturday, with two youths released into the care of their parents under strict conditions, while four older youths have been remanded in custody and will appear in court this week.

Another two alleged offenders were arrested on Sunday as part of the police operation.

Inspector Tere Patia says police are aware that there are people in the community benefiting from the proceeds of these crimes and they will be spoken to as well.

He says benefiting from theft is also a crime and people will be charged if police can identify them.

Police have also urged home and business owners to improve the security around their properties.
