A doctor in Papua New Guinea says HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases will spread like bush fire during the the coming electoral period if more resources aren't in clinics.

The Highlands regional STI/HIV medical officer, told the Post Courier, testing kits and medicines are in low supply and the government needs to budget for these resources.

Dr Petronia Kaima, says during the election supporters of candidates will be going from place to place so there is more chance of people buying and selling sex.

She told a recent joint workshop of the National Aids Council and the PNG Electoral Commission a lack of preparation during the last election in 2007 led to a spike in the statistics.

She says with the huge mobility of people during election, there will be more chance of unplanned pregnancies and people getting HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections.
