PNG MP calls on GG to dissolve parliament

2:41 pm on 24 April 2012

A Papua New Guinea MP, Andrew Kumbakor, has called on the Governor General Sir Michael Ogio to use his reserve powers to dissolve parliament.

Mr Kumbakor, who belongs to the Somare-led administration ousted last year, says this would allow the election process to begin in accordance with the constitution.

He says members of parliament should return to their electorates and prepare for the elections instead of prolonging the life of parliament.

Mr Kumbakor says they are now the laughing stock of the country and those watching around the region and the world.

He says the prime minister could ease the tension in Port Moresby by ensuring the Highlands Mobile Unit returns to its point of origin in preparation for the elections instead of being body guards to MPs.
