A French Polynesia man, who confessed to killing a German tourist Stefan Ramin last year, has told investigators that he shot him because he had been raped by him.
Arihano Haiti surrendered to police in November after being sought for more than 50 days on Nuku Hiva.
Last week, investigators took him from his Papeete prison cell to Nuku Hiva to try to reconstruct events leading to Mr Ramin's death.
Back in Papeete in further interrogations, Haiti was also confronted by Mr Ramin's wife who returned from Germany.
Press reports say he admitted to sexually assaulting her but maintains he was raped by her husband.
She says Arihano Haiti assaulted her after he returned from a Nuku Hiva valley and told her her partner was injured and needed help.
Stefan Ramin's charred remains were found days after he went missing.
The French prosecutor described the initial reporting of the crime, when European and New Zealand media outlets suggested it was case of cannibalism, as lunacy.
