More than 4000 candidates have so far signed up to contest the Papua New Guinea 2012 National Elections.

But officials say the figure may not be the same when the nominations period closes on Friday, the 24th of May.

The figures obtained so far reveal that 4,329 candidates signed up to contest before the closing dates in March.

These are preliminary figures the Post Courier obtained on Monday, from the list of all candidates who have given their bio-data and filled in form 29 provided by all the Political Parties contesting this general election.

The PNG Electoral Commission stressed that these figures were only taken from the bio-data forms and the Commission was still working on the list of candidates from other political parties.

Officials says the final figures of the candidates will be made known when the nomination period closes.
