CNMI doctors making do with equipment

The director of medical affairs at the only hospital in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas says doctors are making do with what equipment they have.

The Commonwealth Health Centre is battling funding and staff shortages, with 30 nurses and four doctors officially tendering their resignations in past weeks and another 17 nurses having resigned earlier this year.

Dr Jeremy Richards says if the situation isn't resolved quickly it could result in further staff losses.

"We've got some issues with equipment that are ongoing and doctors are making do with what they have. The big one is surgery. We are reserving things for emergencies so right now emergent surgery, for general surgery, we're not doing at this time."

Dr Jeremy Richards says doctors are working overtime to maintain critical services.
