Sport: Paul Spargo wins PNG Golf Open

Paul Spargo chased down a five shot deficit on the final day to clinch the 2012 Papua New Guinea Golf Open title.

Spargo finished with a closing round of four under par 68 to finish on nine under par for the tournament, one shot clear of third round leader Brett Rankin and Ian Esson.

Spargo admits that, after bogeying the opening hole, he never really considered winning the tournament to be a realistic option until he strung together a group of birdies on the back nine.

Runner-up Rankin's fate was sealed with two bogeys on the final two holes, to see him close with a two over par 74.
