The Police drug raid in Samoa which left one man dead and three officers injured after a shootout at Faleatiu village has prompted the commissioner to look at using bullet proof vests.
The police commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, says the police don't have vests at the moment, but he is seriously looking at introducing them.
The commissioner has confirmed the officers involved in the raid were armed but he says the guns were for self defence.
Lilomaiava Fou says the drug raid had a different category compared with others, which is why approval of the Minister of Police and Prisons was sought for the use of the guns.
Meanwhile the commissioner says police will try to retrieve the body of the dead man in Faleatiu, Rapi Vaili, for a post mortem to confirm the cause of death.
He says he cannot yet confirm whether the man was shot by a villager or a police officer.
