Tonga school rugby row resolved

6:11 pm on 9 May 2012

Tonga's Education Minister says a conflict over a ban on two schools taking part in inter-collegiate rugby has been resolved.

Dr. 'Ana Taufe'ulungaki says she and her staff received threatening phone calls, texts and emails after she banned students from Tonga College and Tonga High School from taking part in the rugby competition.

She says the ban was in response to the violence that surrounded matches between the schools in Nuku'alofa.

But the minister says she has received apologies for the threats and an endorsement of a programme of rugby matches within the houses at each school, from which a representative team would be chosen.

"There will still be invitational games and when they have home games they are asked to host the visiting team so that they get to know each other, have meals together and share friendship and hopefully that we will reduce the amount of school fights."
