BSP Bank to close Levuka branch in Fiji

10:47 am on 10 May 2012

The Bank of South Pacific in Fiji will close its branch in Levuka on June the 6th.

The bank stated it had reviewed its operations across all branches and decided to close the branch.

Lomaiviti Provincial Council chairman Atunaisa Kaloumaira says he's disappointed that the council, as a key stakeholder, was not consulted.

He says it comes as a bit of shock and added that BSP was used a lot, in particular for the cashing of government cheques.

Mr Kaloumaira says in the long run, with Levuka trying to promote itself as an ecotourism destination, banking support was critical.
