Landowners in Vanuatu issue the government an ultimatum over unpaid rent

5:40 pm on 11 May 2012

The owners of the land on which the head quarters of Vanuatu's Torba provincial administration are located - Sola on Vanualava island - have given the national government seven days to pay years of outstanding rent or they will shut the office down.

One of land owners and a provincial councillor, Jack Wona, says the government has until the 18th of May to settle a debt that extends back to independence 32 years ago.

Mr Wona says the people have been patient long enough and now it is time to claim their entitlements.

He says if there is no sign of payment after 7 days, they will close down the offices.
