Socialist candidate seeks New Caledonia seat in French National Assembly

The Socialist Party in New Caledonia has nominated one candidate for next month's French parliamentary election - the first time it has done so in more than two decades.

Michel Jorda, who works as a doctor, will stand in the electorate that includes the capital, Noumea.

He has told the local newspaper that there is a segment of voters that share the values of the Left that is not tied to the question of being for or against independence from France.

The territory's two seats in the French National Assembly have traditionally been won by anti-independence politicians of the Centre-Right.

This year's election will also be contested by candidates of the National Front and the pro-independence FLNKS movement.
