Former PM Wingti to contest PNG elections

While two former Papua New Guinea prime ministers have indicated they will not stand, another former leader, Paias Wingti, is keen to return.

Last week, both Sir Michael Somare and Sir Mekere Morauta announced they would not stand.

Mr Wingti, who has not been in parliament in ten years, was prime minister for two spells from 1985 to 1994.

He is contesting the regional seat in Western Highlands.

The Post Courier reports that he will be up against the incumbent, Tom Olga, a lawyer John Nonggor and a businessman Max Kumbamong.

Mr Olga narrowly defeated Mr Wingti in 2007.
