Violence in Indonesia's Papua leaves one dead

At least one civilian has been shot dead by Indonesian police after an incident in Bogobaida District in Paniai regency of Papua province.

The Tempo news outlet reports the Head of Paniai Police, Sr Commissioner Antonius Diance, says a group of five people were shot on Tuesday night after attacking police first.

Paramilitary police had been called to the area after the group of five had caused a commotion.

They reportedly attacked the police with billiard cues before the police shot at the group.

Local media reports on the number of casualties vary, with the Jakarta Post reporting that five civilians were killed by police fire.
