An expatriate living in Vanuatu says there is some concern within the foreign community after an elderly European couple were killed and an Englishman was beaten in Port Villa.

The police say the dead couple are from the Netherlands and the third victim, who is in his 60s and is recovering in hospital, is a former school teacher from England.

The acting Commissioner of Police, Arthur Caulton, says a group of escaped prisoners may be behind the attacks.

Marc Neil Jones, who is also publisher of the Vanuatu Daily Post, says crime has increased because the police do not get enough funding and more people are escaping from jail.

He says expatriates should be vigilant, but there is no reason for people to stop visiting.

"Generally speaking there is concern. People aren't overly worried about the situation, murders are very infrequent in Vanuatu, but crime has gone up consistently."

Marc Neil Jones says there is not yet any proof that the prisoners killed the elderly couple or attacked the englishman.
