A firefighter in American Samoa has been charged with manslaughter and homicide by vehicle, in connection with the death of his one-year-old son almost two years ago.

Juliano Tavale was charged in the local court with bail set at 20,000 US dollars.

It's unclear why the government waited almost two years before the charges were filed.

The case came to light in late July of 2010 when the LBJ hospital sent police a report regarding a suspected case of child abuse.

The defendant said while attempting to place his son on the passenger seat he accidentally hit the brakes and the car swerved to the side of the road causing his son to fall hitting the back of his head on the dash board.
