An online petition has been launched in French Polynesia seeking to label imports of genetically modified foods.

The petition says regulations pertaining genetically modified organisms are a matter for the territorial administration and don't fall under the competence of the French state or the European Union.

It says while products imported from the US, Australia and New Zealand are suspected to have GM content, there is no law requiring to disclose this.

The petition says there is no proof GM products pose a risk but equally there is no proof that they are harmless.
