New Caledonia regulates operation of nakamals

12:48 pm on 23 May 2012

The New Caledonian government has adopted regulations for the running of nakamals, which are meeting places to consume kava.

Nakamals now have to get a licence which is renewable after two years.

Failing to do so will incur a fine of 4,700 US dollars.

The government says nakamals are not allowed to serve minors and mustn't serve alcohol or tolerate cannabis consumption.

Nakamals are allowed to be open between five pm and 11 pm.
