Niue MP wary about planned rejig of broadcasting oversight

A Niue parliamentarian has spoken out about plans for the re-organisation of broadcasting, which he says will increase political interference in the media.

The Niue Public Service Commission is undertaking a review of all government activities to identify ways to improve efficiencies and cut costs.

It has told the Broadcasting Corporation of Niue that its board could be done away with and the agency be brought directly under government control.

But MP Terry Coe says such a move would limit transparency and rather than a re-organisation for efficiency is more about the government trying to control content.

"You know these things really should not be taking place because the Ministers should be able to go on the TV and if they think they have been stated wrong they should be able to right it but not to take it over and then to censor all radio programmes and the TV news items."
