The New Zealand Governor-General, Sir Jerry Mateparae, is to visit Samoa to mark both its 50th anniversary of independence and the Treaty of Friendship between the two nations.

Following the state visit to Samoa, Sir Jerry will make his first visit as governor general to Tokelau.

Sir Jerry Mateparae says his visit reflects the importance of New Zealand's special relationship with Tokelau and the commitment to supporting the long-term development of the atolls.

His trip to each of the three atolls will include a welcome ceremony involving the entire community, formal meetings with the Taupulega, or Village Council, and visits to major infrastructure projects supported by New Zealand.
