Tahiti students question candidates in weekend French election

University students in French Polynesia have organised a meeting to question candidates in this weekend's first round of the election of the territory's three members of the French National Assembly.

18 of the 45 candidates accepted the invitation to the event which was billed as speed dating.

Each of them was given seven minutes to make their case and respond to the students' questions.

The students expressed surprise at how little the candidates knew about the status of the university or the basis for higher studies.

They also expressed regret at the number of clownlike candidatures.
