Up to four thousand litres of oil have spilled in Pago Pago harbour in American Samoa after an old fishing vessel moored in the port sank.

Coast Guard Safety Detachment Unit official, Lieutenant Steven Caskey, says the vessel, which has previously been used in oil spill clean ups, sank yesterday morning.

The Coast Guard is trying to refloat the ship and clean up operations are underway.
