PNG police breach rules in Highlands

3:35 pm on 5 June 2012

A police commander in the Papua New Guinea Highlands says one officer has smuggled firearm magazines and ammunitions into the region.

The Post Courier reports the Highlands Division Commander, Chief Superintendent Teddy Tei, as saying another smashed a candidate's poster while some police staff supported a candidate and attacked a sitting MP.

Mr Tei says these actions are a total breach of laws and it is disheartening, particularly when police have been instructed to remain impartial during the election period.
