A former elementary school teacher in American Samoa has been jailed for 28 months for having sex with a 13-year-old student.

Pone Pulou was sentenced to 10 years in jail for statutory rape but the bulk of the sentence has been suspended on condition he serve the 28-month period in prison.

In addition to the jail term, Pulou is required to reimburse the American Samoa government for the money it spent extraditing him from Honolulu last year.

When the victim's pregnancy surfaced in 2010, a criminal case was filed against Pulou but he had already left the territory.
