Vanuatu kava farmers labels ACP meeting a failure

12:52 pm on 12 June 2012

Kava farmers from the Vanuatu island of Pentecost say they are not happy kava is not on the agenda of the African Caribbean and Pacific countries meeting now underway in Port Vila.

They say they had expected the issue of kava, which is banned in Europe, would be discussed by the ACP ministers ahead of their meeting with the European Union on Thursday.

The Pentecost farmers say that oversight is a total failure for hosts Vanuatu.

They say it would be a good opportunity to resolve the European market ban.

Ten years ago, European countries placed bans on kava following concerns about the plant but later research has allayed fears.

Kava remains the main source of income for many rural people in Vanuatu.
