Vanuatu police boss keen on report about recapture of inmates

Vanuatu's acting commissioner of police says his office will do all it can to investigate reports that two escaped prisoners were seriously injured during their recapture.

Seven high-risk prisoners have been on the run in the Port Vila area for weeks, and four remain at large.

Arthur Caulton says he still hasn't received an official report on how the two prisoners were injured.

"We will have to do the investigation, if there are reports or complaints. Otherwise it will be up to the detainees or the director general of correctional services."

Arthur Caulton says more than 300 police officers are securing the current ACP/EU meeting being held in Port Vila, and more are assigned to search for the officers.

He says he would like to see something done to prevent future escapes because police resources are stretched.
