EU makes Fiji aid conditional on progress

3:15 pm on 13 June 2012

The European Commissioner for Development says any support for Fiji elections will depend on what progress the country makes in returning back to constitutional order.

Australia has already offered more than two million dollars to Fiji for elections promised in 2014, and New Zealand says it is drawing up a similar offer.

The European Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, says the EU is very much on the same page as Australia and New Zealand regarding support for Fiji.

"We will definitely find some support of development support, provided it's sustainable development because it is crucially to development, as are helping the people that are most in need, but it also should encourage country to return back to constitutional order and democracy."

Andris Piebalgs says the EU will follow the advice and analysis of Australia and New Zealand regarding the type of support it will give Fiji.
