European Union head says Europe is committed to aid spending

The President of the European Union council of ministers says Europe is committed to its aid spending, despite the crisis in the Eurozone.

The joint EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific group council of ministers is now meeting in Vanuatu.

Christian Friis Bach says the EU is faced with an unprecedented economic and financial crisis.

"But the EU has maintained its position as the biggest global donor of official development assistance, and we have re-affirmed the EU's commitment to spending 0.7 percent of our gross national income. So we, despite the crisis are firmly committed to the goal of eradicating poverty."

Christian Friis Bach says discussions on development aid will be important looking forward to discussions on the future financing of the ACP/EU cooperation after 2013.
