Tonga MP concerned about lack of information about deportees

An opposition MP in Tonga is concerned about criminal deportees returning to Tonga and the lack of information about them.

The People's Representative Dr Sitiveni Halapua says for a number of years now people have been deported from countries like Australia and the United States, but there is no record of how many are in the Kingdom.

He says once they get to Tonga there is no system for registering them.

"We don't really know why they are deported or if there are crimes they committed, we want to know what kind of crimes, if they are dangerous crimes they have committed, what has been done to them, did they go through a programme and so forth."

Dr Sitiveni Halapua would like to see a law or policy introduced that would ensure that all deportees are registered when they return and a programme set up to help reintegrate them back into the Tongan culture.
