Nauru has become the first country to sign up to the formal Australian seasonal workers programme which begins next week.

A pilot programme, which began running nearly fours years ago, finishes at the end of this month.

Nauru's Foreign Minister Dr Kieren Keke says it is a fantastic opportunity for Nauruans.

He says as well as employment the government hopes those taking up the opportunity also appreciate the experience and the new skills to be gained.

Dr Keke says he is confident Nauru's workers will be well informed and ready to meet the challenge.

He says Australian employers will be pleasantly surprised by Nauruan workers, as many speak excellent English and many have skills in operating machinery which will be a bonus.
