Land dispute delays Samoa hospital project

11:46 am on 21 June 2012

The construction of a new US-funded hospital opposite Samoa's Faleolo international airport has been delayed.

This comes after villagers of Satapuala, including matais, stopped government land surveyors from measuring the four hectares of land for the project.

A government source says the villagers had asked the surveyors to leave the land last Friday.

An opposition MP and matai of Satapuala, Toesulusulu Cedric Schuster, says the government has yet to honour its words to discuss the matter with his people.

Toesulusulu leads a political land claim campaign for the return of his village lands taken by the German and New Zealand administrations.

The board of the Trust Estates Corporation, which is the government's lawful owner of the land, is to discuss the issue this weekend.
