French Polynesia opposition warns of Tahiti hospital crisis

11:37 am on 22 June 2012

The French Polynesian opposition has warned of a possible collapse of services at Tahiti's new hospital because of a government failure to pay its dues to the social welfare agency.

An assembly member, Armelle Merceron, has told the assembly that the budgeted shortfall is 25 million US dollars on top off debts from last year.

The assembly was told that suppliers have not been paid for several months.

The opposition says the situation is critical and comes in addition to serious health care problems experienced in outlying islands.
