Air Pacific posts first operating profit in three years

Fiji's national airline, Air Pacific, has posted an operating profit of just over 9 million US dollars, its first for three years.

This compares to a loss of just over 2 million US dollars for the previous financial year and its biggest ever loss two years ago.

The airline also recorded its highest ever revenue of 354 million US dollars, an increase of more than 70 million US dollars on the result two years ago before the start of moves to transform the airline.

The airline's CEO, David Pflieger, says the turnaround plan is clearly working and results were achieved despite increasing fuel costs and competition from low cost carriers, as well as two major floods and a cyclone.

The airline reports 85 thousand more passengers travelled with the airline than in the previous financial year.

Air Pacific will be reverting to its former name Fiji Airways in time for the arrival of new A330-200 aircraft from March 2013.
